Food justice is the belief that everyone deserves nutritious, delicious food regardless of their access to societal power due to any part of their identity or self. Food justice is the belief that food should not be monetized but should be free and accessible to all at all time.
What Is Food Justice?
We’re hyped on mutual aid, community, and food preservation!
Mutual aid: Basically, we believe that when you give, you also receive. When housed and unhoused neighbors come together over a meal, everyone walks away better. Food insecurity affects mental health, physical health, and all sorts of factors determining happiness and safety, but coming together around food combats this!
Community: Easy examples of community are our housed neighbors and our coworkers, but who else do you see? Unhoused folks, undocumented immigrants who are laying low, your mail carrier, and that one cool store clerk make up our people too. How are you connecting with them? How are you sharing with them? For us, community starts and ends at the shared table.
Food preservation: Americans waste about 40% of all food produced in our country on an annual basis, approaching roughly 133 billion tons some years. Some of it is food that can be eaten, like items that were over-ordered at a store or culled for blemishes. We work with local businesses to receive the food they can’t use and get it directly to people at no cost! Head to our partners page to see who keeps our fridges full.
